会议背景介绍:
First of all, it is my great pleasure to welcome all distinguished participants to the 2nd International Symposium of International Federation of Landscape Architects, Asia Pacific Region, Cultural Landscape Committee (IFLA APR CLC) at Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea.
Since a new paradigm called ‘Sustainable Development’ was first introduced in 1987, it has become a global issue that is gaining in importance in various realms such as environmental and/or national development. Rural areas are most closely linked with the natural environment and traditional culture of the land. Therefore the creation of sustainable development in rural society in the 21st century is important and necessary in the planning of rural developments. Rural planning has played a very important role in order to development a sustainable rural environment.
Recently, due to rapid urbanization, the population has become centralized in the urban areas of most of the Asia-Pacific region. This leaves most of the rural areas in a ‘hollow’ state or only inhabited by senior citizens. This phenomenon is the prime culprit for the collapse of rural communities and the deterioration of rural environments, leading to issues such as poverty in rural areas. This is an issue all the countries in the Asia-Pacific region seem to have in common. In the past, the traditional rural communities in Asia have focused on rice culture. They have settled down as farmers and blended themselves into their natural surroundings. Through this experiencing of traditional life-styles, sustainable ways of living have been created before the influence of the Western intrusion. This sustainable experience may be utilized in the structure plan for sustainable rural developments in Asia-Pacific region.
Most Asia-Pacific countries, which have been living sustainable traditional lives, would like to request feedback from different areas in these regions in order to help clarify the characteristics of rural cultural landscapes in the Asia-Pacific region. For this purpose, this symposium has been organized to enable us to exchange ideas on this subject with participants from various other countries of our region. It is not only to help find a solutions to the problems faced by rural areas in the Asia-Pacific region but also to define the future direction of rural development in the Asia-Pacific region.
The goals of this symposium are : to review the existing rural cultural landscapes from the point-of-view of the Asia-Pacific people; to share ideas and experiences from and about sustainable rural landscapes and planning in different Asia-Pacific countries; and to find future solutions for rural planning which fit to Asia-Pacific culture.
The expected outcome of this symposium is to create a basic database of rural cultural landscapes in the Asia-Pacific region and also to build a network of relevant experts. Using this database and network, we believe we can help enhance rural landscape and planning through regional cooperation, technical support, and experience. This may act as a platform for the exchanging of ideas in rural landscapes and planning in Asia-Pacific region.
The feedback from the discussions facilitated by this symposium may find future application in the practice of rural planning and development for Asia-Pacific region. We hope this symposium can provide inspiration for rural planning experts to create new types of rural development models.
The symposium’s schedule contains many activities designed to help organize the networking of experts in rural cultural landscapes and planning in Asia-Pacific regions to facilitate the sharing of expertise for rural landscape and planning.
We are proud to host such a symposium, and we promise you that we will make every endeavor to ensure your time here is fulfilling. I wish to welcome you all and hope you have a wonderful experience attending the symposium, workshops, and technical excursions.
